DIY Thor Armor with Cape, hammer and helmet – The whole Ensemble

Well! Avenger fever continues and this month it happens to be Thor’s turn. The little one has been troubling me to find him a Thor costume. By now, he’s figured out that if he nags mom enough, I’ll make him something (anything) just to get him out of my hair. My kids are pretty intuitive that way and pretty persistent! Probably they get it from dad 🤪

So here’s what I came up with some used/existing supplies at home.

The armor is made mainly with an old black capri and the cape is red felt fabric. You could alternatively use any black fabric or old even old dupattas(or scarves) for this.

Drape the capri on the child like a scarf and pin up for measurements as shown in pic. Pin up the front legs together so that it forms a comfortable V around the neck.

Similarly pin the cape fabric to the back adding ruffles at the shoulders if preferred. (I added the ruffles to try and match the cape that we see in the movies)

Now sew the cape to the top and the legs together to form your basic structure.

I inserted a little cotton/polyfill from the bottom of the legs right at the shoulders to give the broad muscular look to the armor. Seal it close. You could use old scrap fabric or even crumpled newspapers for the same.

I also inserted some stiff mesh fabric I had left over in my stash to give the armor some form.

Now Sew a fabric/felt belt and the only thing left is the design/embellishments.

I used gray duct tapes to give it that steel finish. You just need to cut out the shapes as required and attach to the fabric as shown. Cutting duct tape can be a little challenging. I am listing down a few tips and tricks to make it easy. Duct tape cutting tricks coming up soon!

And there you go!

Paired this with a Styrofoam hammer. Take a look at the instagram post below to see the materials I used.

We made the helmet with cereal box following the same approach I used for face masks and a print out we found here.

And there goes my super hero!! 😍
